In November 2018, the Rector of the University of Groningen signed a memorandum of understanding with Mexico’s Instituto Nacional de Cardiología “Ignacio Chávez”. The agreement was signed on behalf of Groningen’s Faculty of Medicine and confirms both institutions’ desire to increase collaborations in the area of cardiovascular research.
According to both Rector Elmer Sterken as well as Institute Director Dr Marco Martínez Ríos, there is great potential to cooperate in clinical and basic research. The University Medical Center Groningen has prioritized cardiovascular research and the Ignacio Chávez Institute is a national point of reference in Mexico.
The agreement will be further reinforced by the collaboration between Groningen and the Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México (UNAM). During the November visit, Rector Sterken met with his UNAM colleague Dr Enrique Graue Wiechers. At the occasion, both rectors committed to a strategic collaboration agenda in the areas of postgraduate studies, educational innovation, and sustainability. Moreover, the University of Groningen will open an office at UNAM in the first quarter of 2019.
Groningen and UNAM have the opportunity to enroll double degree PhD students in all academic fields. This collaboration started a few years ago in medical sciences, and a number of double-degree doctoral candidates has already enrolled.
