From 24 to 28 August 2015, the Graduate School of Medical Sciences will for the first time organize the summer school Industrial Perspectives on Innovative Medicine (IPIM). The UMCG considers it important that students learn about private sector priorities and the societal impact of their research, in order for them to become fully equipped translational researchers.
Purpose
IPIM is a one-week interactive school to which we invite different speakers from the private sector (Pharma/Drug Discovery; Biotech; Diagnostics; and Food & Nutrition), as well as experts in the areas of Entrepreneurship, Intellectual Property Rights, and research funding. Students gain insight into non-academic decision making processes and improve their perspective on the societal value of biomedical research. Additionally, they will gain hands-on experience in implementing some traditionally non-academic concepts in their research proposals, including:
- Customer value
- Competition
- Competitive advantage (in relation to technological development/road-mapping)
- Team Importance
On the final day, each assignment group will present their research proposal as an investor pitch. The pitch deemed the most original and commercially viable proposal by the judging panel will receive a prize!
Organization
IPIM is organized by the Graduate School of Medical Sciences of the University of Groningen/University Medical Center Groningen, in close cooperation with Frits Wijbenga of the Groningen Business Generator. During IPIM, students will get a chance to learn from representatives of both large and small pharmaceutical companies, as well as academic researchers and business developers.
