ISCOMS – the International Student Congress of (bio)Medical Sciences – is one of the world’s leading student congresses organized by students and for students. The University Medical Center Groningen is home to ISCOMS for the 22nd time in 2015. At ISCOMS, (bio)medical research talent has the opportunity to broaden their scientific network and explore opportunities for continued master and (sandwich) PhD research, also at the UMCG!
Graduate School of Medical Sciences support for ISCOMS
Also in 2015, the Graduate School of Medical Sciences provides support for students from strategic partners in the Abel Tasman Talent Program who have been selected to present their abstract at ISCOMS. For these students, all fees will be covered by the GSMS. Additionally we encourage students to apply to one of the International Research Fellowships (IRF) following ISCOMS.
In 2015, a total of 24 abstracts from students from our strategic partners were selected by ISCOMS!
ISCOMS International Research Fellowships
The GSMS welcomes all students to apply to one of the International Research Fellowships available on the ISCOMS website. However, in case you are considering a particular research area for a possible (sandwich) PhD project and that area is not covered by one of the IRFs, we would like to offer selected students from our strategic partners with an additional opportunity to be matched to a Principal Investigator in their area of preference for the IRF.
If this is the case for you, please consult the UMCG research portfolio, and send us your preferred research line(s), a letter of motivation including your research project, and a CV as soon as possible, but in any case before 15 April 2015. Note that all candidates should first of all check the regular IRFs available on the website and that the GSMS cannot guarantee placement, however, we will do our best to make the ISCOMS experience as valuable as possible for you.
GSMS-supported prize winners 2014
In the 2014 edition, two students supported by the GSMS were awarded prizes. It concerns Roberto Brito of our partner Universidad de Chile and Adrián Murillo of the Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México. Both students had been selected by their home universities to receive the GSMS "ISCOMS voucher". Roberto took the Plenary Award 1st Prize for his research on “Effects of high-dose vitamin C supplementation on antioxidants systems in patients undergoing percutaneous coronary angioplasty after acute myocardial infarction” and Adrián was the winner of the Poster Research Award with his exposition entitled “The kinase WNK1 is a Powerful Inhibition of the K+:Cl-Cotransporters”.
(Sandwich) PhD opportunities after ISCOMS
The GSMS views ISCOMS as a perfect opportunity for talented students from our strategic partners who have a passion for research to become acquainted with the University of Groningen/University Medical Center Groningen. If you are interested in continuing (part of) your PhD studies at the UMCG, please let us know as soon as possible and we may inform you about which further steps to take. Additionally:
