PhD Scholarships for Mexican Students

Mexican Students have an opportunity to apply for funding to do their PhD studies abroad through the scholarships available from the Mexican Council for Science & Technology (CONACYT).

Calls for Applications

The 2019 call for PhD studies abroad has opened March 2019. Access the overview of all CONACYT calls for applications to be published the first half of 2019 (in Spanish) here.

Please note CONACYT regional offices ("entidades federales") may open additional calls for applications with different deadlines throughout the year.

Call for Applications and Deadlines 2019

The central call for full PhD funding for 2019 has been published on 11 March and will be open from 15 April until 14 June 2019.

Students themselves are responsible to submit their application to CONACYT. The following general dates & deadlines for PhD applicants apply:

  • Applications to be submitted as of 15 April 2019
  • Application deadline: 14 June 2019
  • Publication of results: 26 July 2019

Start of scholarship: before 13 March 2020

Note that the Graduate School needs approximately 3-4 months to prepare your stay before you can actually start your PhD in Groningen. A realistic start date therefore is 1 November 2019.

For Prospective PhD Students

We welcome you to look into our Research Portfolio or download the brochure. You can find the outline of the PhD curriculum in the PhD Study Guide. In case you need assistance locating a supervisor for your PhD project, please send a message to the Graduate School of Medical Sciences with your English language CV and a summary of your research focus.

Applicants will need to provide the following documents to CONACYT that require input from the Graduate School and/or UMCG supervisor:

  • Letter of acceptance, contact the Graduate School of Medical Sciences
  • PhD project proposal (max. 10 pp.)
  • CV of PhD supervisor (max. 5 pp.)
  • Outline of the PhD curriculum: use the PhD Study Guide

For UMCG Supervisors

In order to prepare the letter of acceptance for CONACYT applicants, UMCG Principal Investigators should provide the Graduate School of Medical Sciences with the following supporting information and documents:

CV of the candidate, including:

  • Full name
  • Place & date of birth
  • E-mail address

About the project:

  • Total number of months of funding requested (max. 48 months)
  • Provisional start date PhD project (note that results are published late July: a realistic start date is 1 November 2019)
  • PhD project title
  • Title(s) and name(s) of supervisor(s) and their departmental affiliation(s)

In accordance with the agreement between CONACYT and the University of Groningen, no tuition and/or bench fees can be claimed from CONACYT. UMCG supervisors of successful applicants will receive the standard annual contribution towards bench fees from the Graduate School.
