Chile: 2019 matchmaking event

From Monday 23 to Wednesday 25 September 2019, the University of Groningen/UMCG and Universidad de Chile (UCH) will celebrate nearly a decade of excellent academic relations and the official launch of the first call for applications of the Joint Doctoral Program (JDP) in biomedical sciences. Rectors Ennio Vivaldi of UCH and Elmer Sterken of Groningen signed the JDP agreement in July 2018.

The matchmaking event aims to bring together some of the best biomedical researchers in Chile and Groningen. It has the specific purpose to identify joint research projects and candidates for the JDP.

The following Chilean institutes/faculties have already confirmed their participation:

  • Geroscience Center for Brain Health and Metabolism (GERO)
  • Facultad de Medicina, Universidad de Chile
  • Advanced Center for Chronic Diseases (ACCDiS)
  • Facultad de Ciencias, Universidad de Chile
  • Instituto Milenio de Neurociencia Biomédica (BNI)
  • Millenium Institute of Immunology and Immunotherapy (IMII)

At Groningen, we count with the participation of researchers affiliated to:

  • University Medical Center Groningen
  • Faculty of Science & Engineering
  • European Research Institute for the Biology of Ageing (ERIBA)
  • Aletta Jacobs School of Public Health
  • Faculty of Behavioural & Social Sciences
  • Faculty of Economics & Business

Additionally, a representative of the Universidad de Antioquia, Colombia, a Strategic Partner of both UCH and Groningen will attend the matchmaking event.

The organization of the event will be theme-based, i.e. experts from different institutes and faculties will join in thematic sessions (see below).

The preliminary program includes:

  • A plenary opening session with all Chilean and Groningen researchers and authorities on Monday afternoon 23 September followed by drinks & dinner (see program)
  • Thematic sessions in which all researchers present themselves and one-on one matchmaking sessions on Tuesday 24 and Wednesday 25 September (organization by academic theme leaders)
  • Tailor-made programs have been designed for any participating researcher who does not fit one of the larger subthemes
  • Information on sessions in specific subthemes is available for Health, Science & Technology/Finance, and Life Sciences

Health-related thematic sessions

Subtheme Coordinator Groningen Coordinator UCH
Neurosciences & Ageing Biology Dr Amalia Dolga Dr Christian González Billault

Update July 2019

  • A tailor-made program will be made for Chilean researchers with an interest in Public Health/Epidemiology by dr Adriana Perez Fortis of the Aletta Jacobs School of Public Health and prof. dr Han Moshage at the University Medical Center Groningen
  • The subthemes in Oncology and Nanoscience & Drug Delivery have been merged into one larger theme "Oncology & Drug Delivery"

Non-Health thematic sessions (under construction)

UCH, in cooperation with the Faculty of Science & Engineering of the University of Groningen, will also organize a few non-health related thematic sessions. A preliminary overview with their coordinators:

Subtheme Coordinator Groningen Coordinator UCH
Data Science, Mathematics & Astronomy Dr Cristóbal Bertoglio & Prof. dr. Reynier Peletier Dr Richard Weber
Evolutionary Biology Prof. dr. Chris Smit Tbc
Finance Prof. dr. Niels Hermes Dr J. Miguel Cruz

Interested participants in these sessions should get in touch with the coordination at the Faculty of Science & Engineering, Liza ten Velde. The registration procedure is the same for everyone and described below.

Registration for Participants

Participating (visiting) researchers as well as Chilean non-academic members of the organization need to register online (Google form).

Part of the registration for academics is a completed Participating Researcher information sheet available for download here (.docx). Make sure to fill out the sheet before completing your registration.

If you are a Chilean non-academic member of the organization, you may upload a blank sheet or your cv instead.

The registration information is very important because it will be used for:

  • logistic arrangements (e.g. hotel, meals)
  • design of the academic program
  • matchmaking between academics
